Team Portsmouth Races for Mother's Day weekend

By mcarey - Posted on 07 May 2011

Team Portsmouth Racing is off to Charlottesville this weekend. You can see Thomas and Christopher Carey climbing Wintergreen Mountain for the State Championship Hill Climb.

Thomas will be racing in the 13-14yo category against 4 other racers his age. The competition is tough but, Thomas has been outfitted with shimano slx sub compact cranks this year. The extremely small front chainrings should help out significantly when the grade exceeds 15%. Testing out in the driveway in the 22 front and 25 rear he was doing about 4mph with a relatively high cadence. The plan is to cut some time off by being able to ride straight in places the competition has to zig zag to maintain any cadence at all.

Christopher will be competing against his buddy Dane Cradock for the 10-12yo category. New to cycling Christophers strategy is more of a cyclocross style. If it gets too steep he has a set of shimano tennis shoe style spd shoes. He will dismount and run as fast as he can. The recessed cleat and good tread are perfect for the off the bike hikes! For a beginner just to finish wintergreen is an accomplishment. Many adults will bow out tomorrow. No shame in it...Just regret.

Thomas will also be Racing 50 miles in the Jefferson cup road race! This race is part of the sutter home selection races to give amateurs a chance to race the pro's! Thomas isn't even old enough to get the bar points from this race. The youngest category on the registration is the 15-16yo. This will be a good opportunity for Thomas to better himself by gaining experience in the largest road race in Virginia.

Will update on the results ASAP, wish em luck
